Dear Friends,

The St. Pete Times just endorsed my campaign for State Representative. Here's what they said about me: Russ Patterson District 60

This district gravitates toward political moderates who respect the rural and suburban lifestyles of Lutz and the needs of younger neighborhoods in New Tampa and Temple Terrace. Democrat Russ Patterson has the broadest agenda and appeal across party lines in this race for an open seat being vacated by Rep. Ed Homan, who is term-limited.

Patterson, 58, is a part-time teacher and retired Air Force officer. He wants to better prepare college-bound students in English and math and work with teachers to boost academic performance. Patterson has a sensible plan for collecting sales tax on Internet purchases and closing other tax loopholes, and he would invest more in clean-energy technologies as a way to create jobs. His environmental proposals suit a district long involved in farming and rich in water resources. He opposes oil drilling in near-shore state waters and would encourage the use of Florida-friendly native plants as a means to curb water consumption.

Republican Shawn Harrison, 45, is a Tampa attorney and former member of Tampa City Council. He represented north Tampa well at City Hall, knows the issues and is respected for his demeanor. Harrison's focus on small-business development is the right priority for the district. His work on transportation also gives him contacts throughout the Tampa Bay area.

But Harrison does not appear to have thought through many pressing issues facing the state. His idea to balance the state budget with across-the-board cuts is a simplistic approach and reflects a discomfort in making hard choices. Harrison wants to get back into the political sphere, but he needs a more compelling message.

In House District 60, the Times recommends Russ Patterson. This is the full article link: http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/editorials/for-a-better-florida-house/1128181.

As you may know, we are raising money to be competitive on the airwaves and with mail. If you can help just a little bit more, we would be grateful. It will make a difference. You may contribute online via: http://www.actblue.com/page/russforus. This will lead you to a secure link. (Please note that you may contribute a maximum of $500 per person or entity per election, that is since Aug 24, 2010.)

Thank you all for your help in making this campaign very competitive!!!

Take care,

Russ

We have new bumper stickers!

If you want one, let us know, or come down to the Headquarters at 6050 River Trace Road, across the street from All People's Park on E. Sligh Ave. to pick one up.

We are also in the final 30 days - if you have spare time, please give some to my campaign. We are canvassing every day, and phone banking every day. Phoning is easy. You can do it at home or at the Headquarters. We'll give you training to make it exceptionally easy. We even have some of my friends and family making calls from out of town, so you don't even have to be near-by to help. You just need "free" long-distance. Knocking on doors is great exercise, and the people in our district are generally very friendly! If you don't want to knock, but still want to help, we can use drivers for the walkers (or bikers). We have walk sheets available every day at the Headquarters. Monday to Friday - meet at Headquarters from 4:00pm Saturday Morning - meet at Headquarters from 9:30am Saturday Afternoon - meet at Headquarters from 4:00pm Sunday Afternoon - meet at Headquarters from 3:00pm If you have to be late (we know work hours are often later than 4:00pm, come on by, as we will have a person at HQ to pass out material.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement.

I'm looking forward to November 2nd.

Take care,

Russ

What they're saying:

La Gaceta says:

"Mr Patterson is the leading Democrat and is likely to face Republican Shawn Harrison, who is considered the favorite. Even so, Patterson is running an aggressive race and will be more competitive than most would think at first glance."

My campaign has some events coming soon, and I'd be grateful if you could make it to one of them. It's a chance to get more involved in the campaign, to meet other supporters, to learn more about me and to support locally owned businesses. Please feel free to bring your friends.

Thanks,
Russ Patterson

Dear All

I thought you would like to know that I was endorsed for my campaign for State Representative by the Tampa Tribune this morning. My campaign is the only Democratic Campaign to get on the ballot by the petition process. We did this with a strong field team who knocked on many doors and talked to many voters in our district. The district is ready for Democratic leadership. When we have talked to Democratic and No Party Affiliation voters and have told them that Dr Homan is not running, they are ready to vote for me. I also ask for your support and vote, if you live in the district.ttp://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jul/31/co-our-choices-in-house-districts-60-61-and-67/news-opinion-editorials/

Dear All

I am very happy to report that the St Petersburg Times has endorsed my campaign for State Representative

Here's the link: http://www.tampabay.com/opinion/editorials/times-recommends-for-florida-legislature/1113477.

Here's the relevant section to the whole article:

Russ Patterson House 60, Democrats Both Democrats seeking this open seat are first-time candidates with thin records in the north Tampa community. Retired Air Force veteran Russ Patterson has rich life experience that better prepares him for the serious challenges in Tallahassee. Patterson, 58, moved to Tampa in 2004. He spent 20 years as an Air Force navigator and the past decade as a consumer advocate and substitute teacher. Patterson would close sales tax loopholes, invest more in solar and other renewable energies and manage growth by steering development into already-urbanized areas. He has impressed many established local Democrats by seeing the big picture and having the maturity to realize that progress in Tallahassee can come in small pieces. Christopher Carlos Cano, 27, is a third-generation Tampa native who is studying for a master's degree in public administration at the University of South Florida. A Democratic and Hispanic activist, Cano has energy and passion. Public service needs more young people with a long-term view. But Cano is not up to speed on fundamental issues; he is more attuned to politics than policy. Patterson has worked harder in this campaign and reached out to more constituent groups. The district, which covers New Tampa, Lutz and Temple Terrace, has varied interests and needs a representative who can juggle. In the Democratic primary for House District 60, the Times recommends Russ Patterson.
